Here are some tips for regular care and maintenance of your windshield.
Don't Wash Auto Glass With Ammonia
You want to keep the windshield and all other auto glass on your car clean, but make sure you use the right type of cleaner. Glass cleaner with ammonia tends to be too harsh, especially if your windows are tinted, so avoid using a standard window cleaner. You have a few different options. The first is to get an auto glass cleaner from your local auto supply store. Another option is to make your own glass cleaner with diluted vinegar. When wiping down the windows, use a microfiber towel as it won't leave lint or streaks behind.
Handle Chips and Damage With Care
You may end up with minor damage on your windshield, whether from rocks falling on the window or after a small accident. While a small chip or hole in the windshield doesn't necessarily mean the entire window has to be replaced, the damage could worsen if you're not careful. Look at the damage and consider its size and depth. If it looks like a star shape and the points are spreading out, it is at risk of cracking further. In this case, you do need to have the crack repaired or the window replaced.
For other types of glass damage, just be very careful when cleaning it so you avoid more damage. It is also a good idea to cover the crack with tape to prevent it from getting worse. This is of course only an option if it doesn't block your view. There are also windshield repair kits you can use for small chips. You should also be careful about closing the car doors; avoid slamming them as the force could cause the damage to worsen.
Replace the Windshield Wiper Blades
If you start hearing your windshield wipers make a screeching sound when operating them, or they aren't working efficiently, it is time to replace the blades. If you use old blades, it could scratch your window. It is even more important to have fresh blades when you have damage on your windshield. If you use worn blades on a window with cracks or chips, the cracks will gradually get worse and you might need to replace the window. Blades are inexpensive and easy to replace.
